Remembering the World Through Scent: My Journey into Aromatherapy

It Began with the Scent of a Book

My earliest memory of scent dates back to kindergarten. I can still remember the smell of a particular book to this day. Perhaps because I have a very sensitive sense of smell, I’ve always experienced the world through “scent.” It doesn’t have to be food or fragrance-related objects—whether it’s a new book, a phone, a computer, or even a toy, I instinctively smell it first.

For me, scent is a form of connection. It is an entry point to memory and a key that unlocks emotions.

Wandering Through Scents

When I studied in Australia, I loved spending time in large shopping malls, especially at perfume counters and candle shops. It felt like traveling through different landscapes with my nose. After returning to Hong Kong, I continued this habit and filled my home with various types of diffusers and fragrances.

One day, while walking through a mall, I noticed a small shop displaying tiny bottles and diffusers emitting fragrant mist. At that time, however, I usually bought the reed diffusers from another store upstairs. Curious, I asked the sales assistant about the small bottles. She responded strongly, saying that the products from upstairs were not beneficial to health and could not truly relieve stress. She invited me to smell the oils in her shop and began introducing their properties.

That was my first encounter with essential oils.

I was surprised that such small bottles cost over a hundred dollars each. Why were they so expensive? Why did she emphasize their therapeutic effects so much? I took home several brochures and began researching online. That was when I learned about “essential oils” and the profession of an “aromatherapist.”

Because it was related to scent, I felt deeply drawn to it.

From Curiosity to Commitment

I have always been someone who loses interest quickly, but with aromatherapy, it was different. I immersed myself wholeheartedly and decided to become a professional aromatherapist. Around that time, I was preparing for marriage and motherhood, so I left my job to focus on studying. Eventually, I became an IFA-certified aromatherapist.

That moment became a major turning point in my life.

A Turning Point During Pregnancy

During my pregnancy, I met someone I deeply admired—a mentor who was both an aromatherapist and a formulator. At the time, DIY skincare was becoming popular in Hong Kong, and her shop was hiring. I felt an immediate and strong desire to work with her.

I learned so much from her, and it sparked the idea of creating my own skincare brand. However, my standards were very high, and building a brand required significant cost and risk. It felt beyond what I could manage. Instead of launching a large-scale brand, I chose to create customized products within my own circle, tailoring them to individual needs and gathering feedback from friends.

Finding My Own Way

My direction shifted several times until a friend encouraged me to share my work on social media. Initially, I considered selling skincare products, but I could not accept producing them for the market without proper laboratory control. So I decided to focus on sharing aromatherapy knowledge and creating customized blends for those who needed them.

With continued practice and experience, I gradually understood what different plants could offer—some soothe the mind, others support physical healing. This knowledge came from repeated experimentation and personal insight. I also enjoy exchanging ideas with talented teachers in Taiwan, whose expertise has deepened my understanding of formulation and therapeutic effects.

Today, I know that scent is more than fragrance. It is a quiet companion. It supports us through difficult times and brings gentle light into ordinary days.
